Murtha Means More

Murtha Cullina Attorney Elizabeth J. Stewart Wins 2012 Ladder Award

March 26, 2012

March 26, 2012 – Murtha Cullina attorney Elizabeth J. Stewart is the 2012 recipient of the Fifth Annual Ladder Award presented by the Women in the Law Committee of the Young Lawyers Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.

Award recipients are evaluated on the basis of outstanding contributions to women’s leadership development in terms of impact, sustainability, comprehensiveness, distinguished excellence, and leadership empowerment, particularly in mentoring junior female attorneys.

Ms. Stewart is currently Managing Partner of Murtha Cullina LLP and Chairperson of the firm’s Executive Committee. She practices as a trial lawyer, handling principally policyholder-side insurance coverage and complex commercial litigation.

Ms. Stewart joined the firm as an associate (1986) in the Litigation Department, later becoming department Chair – and also becoming the first woman attorney in the firm to sit as a department chair. As Managing Partner, Ms. Stewart is the first woman to take that position in the firm, and also one of the first women to hold it in the state of Connecticut. In addition to her firm roles, Elizabeth Stewart serves on the Executive Committees of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Insurance Selection, Litigation Selection and Federal Practice Section. She also serves as a Special Master for securities law matters of the District of Connecticut, and is a member of the American Bar Association’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee and a member of Murtha Cullina’s E-Discovery Group. Along with her firm duties and memberships, Ms. Stewart is a mother to her son Connor.

Ms. Stewart has also taken an active role in Murtha Cullina’s Diversity Committee. Through the committee, she works to encourage the firm’s younger female attorneys to feel empowered with respect to business development and to also take charge of their legal careers. Her work to recruit and foster the advancement of female attorneys is a continued effort and one that has been career long.

“In all respects, Elizabeth Stewart has made a mark on the Connecticut legal profession as both an attorney and an attorney who happened to be a woman,” said Burt Cohen, partner at Murtha Cullina LLP, Chair of the Murtha Cullina’s Diversity Committee and award nominator. “During the course of her legal career, Elizabeth Stewart has demonstrated that women who are professionally competent can excel both as firm leaders and leaders of the bar. She singlehandedly has shaped the face of Murtha Cullina as a firm where women lawyers can develop and succeed, and also attain the leadership ranks.”

The Ladder Award ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 29, 5:30 p.m. at the Inn at Middletown, 70 Main Street, Middletown, CT. The 2012 Ladder Awards dinner is being held in conjunction with the Women in the Law Committee’s Pathways to Success event.
