Mark R. Sussman
Mark Sussman, of counsel, assists clients on all aspects of environmental law with particular emphasis on air and water pollution, waste management, Brownfields remediation, chemical regulation, and water supply issues.
A substantial part of Mark’s practice involves advising clients on site remediation issues and Brownfields redevelopment. This work includes serving as outside environmental counsel in connection with the remediation and redevelopment of the former Remington Park manufacturing facility in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a 422 acre industrial site subject to a RCRA corrective action order. Mark also successfully led a team which obtained only the second final cleanup approval ever issued by Connecticut for a RCRA-permitted site.
Mark has extensive experience in representing energy companies on environmental matters. He served as lead environmental counsel in the development and permitting of a variety of power plants, including: Connecticut’s largest merchant power plant - a 792 megawatt, gas-fired combustion turbine project; a 180 megawatt circulating fluidized bed coal cogeneration plant; four waste-to-energy plants; modifications to Connecticut’s largest coal electric generating station; and a number of other smaller power plants.
Mark’s practice also includes the representation of renewable energy companies. He has represented solar project and anaerobic digestion project developers. Representative projects include the acquisition and development of 6 megawatts of solar projects in North Carolina and the development of a food waste and sludge renewable energy project in Connecticut.
Prior to entering private practice, Mark served in the Land and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Justice Department as a trial attorney and at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a water quality engineer. In addition to his administrative and environmental counseling practice, Mark participates in and supervises environmental litigation matters.
