Robert J. Kasten is a Patent Agent in the Intellectual Property practice at Murtha Cullina.

Robert is a former Patent Examiner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office where he examined patent applications in Art Group 1795, which covered electrochemistry, including fuel cells and batteries.  In addition to his work as a Patent Examiner, Robert has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting both domestic and foreign patent applications in the electrochemical, biological, and mechanical arts.  As a former Patent Examiner who is very comfortable in dealing with the Patent Office, Robert often utilizes Examiner interviews, including video conferences, to gain outstanding results for Murtha Cullina’s clients.  Robert's B.S. degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering assists him in understanding a wide array of technology areas.  He has drafted and prosecuted applications in the following industries:

  • Clean technologies
  • Organic chemistry
  • Nanotechnology
  • Medical devices
  • Construction technologies
  • Business methods and software (including mobile applications)

In addition to patent preparation and prosecution, Robert provides technical and patent-specific support for services such as patentability and freedom-to-operate searches, opinions, and litigation.  He has experience working with experts in the preparation of their technical opinions in IP cases.

Robert's experience as a Patent Examiner combined with his extensive patent preparation and prosecution experience in private law firm practice allows him to quickly grasp inventors’ inventive concepts and craft patent claims that both align with clients’ business objectives and maximize the scope of protection that will likely be allowed by the Patent Office.

Robert and his wife have one son and two dogs. In his spare time, Robert enjoys cycling and golf.
