Covered entities and business associates need to make HIPAA compliance a top priority, because the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) is now aggressively enforcing HIPAA. HITECH has allowed the Secretary of Health and Human Services to impose significantly higher Civil Monetary Penalties (CMP) for violations of the HIPAA rules. In addition, implementation of the HITECH Act has strengthened the HIPAA protections and rights related to an individuals health information.
