Physicians making the decision to give up private practice and become employees of a hospital or an affiliate have to face significant culture shock.  The first painful discovery is learning that the hospital cannot value and purchase the intangibles the physician has developed over many years of successful community practice:  patient lists, medical records or "goodwill."
