OCR Rolls Out HIPAA Audit Program

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has published plans to audit 150 covered entities for compliance with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules (the "Audit Program"). An initial round of 20 audits has already begun. The Audit Program, which is being conducted byKPMG, will include only HIPAA-covered entities (e.g., health care providers, health plans and health care clearinghouses), but not business associates.
