Welcome to the Thirteenth Issue of Quae Vide, Murtha Cullina's Diversity Newsletter.
MURTHA CULLINA DIVERSITY COMMITTEE WELCOMES NEW CHAIRPERSON
Murtha Cullina’s Diversity Committee is happy to introduce new chairperson, Thomas S. Vangel. Tom served as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee from 2007 through 2012 and served as partner in charge of the Boston office from 2000 through 2003. Tom has been a member of the Boston Lawyers Group for many years and has served on its Executive Committee since 2009.
Founded in 1986, the Boston Lawyers Group is a collaborative consortium of over 45 legal organizations. The mission of the BLG is to help its member organizations to identify, recruit, advance and retain lawyers of color in Boston’s legal community.
Many thanks to Burt Cohen for his six years of service as chairperson of the Diversity Committee. Under Burt’s leadership, Murtha Cullina significantly enhanced its commitment to diversity. Illustrative of Burt’s efforts is the fact that Murtha Cullina will be serving as the host firm for the Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity for two years starting in early November 2014. The Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, the Connecticut counterpart to the Boston Lawyers Group, was formed in 2003 to increase recruitment, retention and advancement of lawyers of color, not only as good social policy, but also as exemplary business practice.
As we go to print, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick received the Beacon Award for Diversity and Inclusion from the Boston Bar Association. Governor Patrick is the first African-American to be elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and will be leaving office in January after serving two terms. The Boston Bar Association is bestowing upon him the Beacon Award for Diversity and Inclusion in celebration of his groundbreaking efforts to create a more diverse judiciary in Massachusetts. Boston Bar Association President Julia Huston noted that “by nominating increasing numbers of women and minorities for state court judgeships Governor Patrick has truly changed the legal landscape to more adequately reflect the community at large.” In fact, Governor Patrick appointed one of our partners, Joan Armstrong, to the Probate and Family Court where she has presided since 2008. Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy has made similar strides in promoting diversity within the judiciary.
MURTHA CULLINA HOSTS WOMEN EXPANDING BUSINESS EVENT
On September 11, 2014, Murtha Cullina hosted a Women Expanding Business (WEB) event at the Connecticut Historical Society. The event brought together more than 90 of the region’s top businesswomen for an evening of networking. The event included special access to the Connecticut Historical Society’s “Katharine Hepburn - Dressed for Stage and Screen” exhibit. Ms. Hepburn’s dynamic attitude created a boisterous environment for all WEB guests to exchange industry insights and ideas.
“Events like this prove that women are charging forward in the legal and business communities,” said Dena Castricone, co-chair of WEB. “Murtha Cullina offers direct evidence of this as both our current Managing Partner and our Managing Partner-Elect are women.” The goal of WEB, Murtha Cullina’s women’s initiative, is to encourage, promote and support the professional development of women within the firm and in the legal and business community. WEB events focus on networking, practice and client development, marketing and the retention and promotion of women professionals.
