Michael E. McDonough

Michael E. McDonough, Murtha Cullina LLP Partner and Executive Committee Member, Passes Away at 52

Murtha Cullina mourns the unexpected loss of our partner and dear friend Michael E. McDonough. Mike passed away in his sleep Saturday night.

“Mike joined Murtha Cullina in 1997, and immediately impressed everyone with his intelligence and judgment,” said Managing Partner Jennifer Morgan DelMonico. “He worked his way up through the ranks quickly, becoming a partner in 2005, serving as Chair of the Business & Finance Department for many years, and ultimately joining the Firm’s Executive Committee in 2014.”

He worked out of the Firm’s Hartford office and represented investment banks, non-profit institutions, trustees, commercial banks and borrowers in commercial and tax exempt financings. He also counseled investment advisors and broker dealers, and served as general and finance counsel to a number of institutions.

“Mike was our loyal and dedicated partner and friend, as well as a great guy and a lot of fun,” said DelMonico. “On business trips, he would make time to explore the city he was in, always finding the newest restaurant and the coolest local band.  He loved to have real conversations about music and politics, and to share the latest adventures of his family and accomplishments of his kids. We will miss him greatly.”

A true lover of music, Mike taught himself to play guitar as an adult and enjoyed playing in bands. For a time he was in a band called “Crushin’ Scarlet” which featured three Murtha Cullina attorneys.

“He loved his family and he loved music,” Murtha Cullina partner and good friend Michael J. Donnelly said. “He cared about the people he worked with, and treated everyone with respect, from his biggest clients to the newest staff members.”

“Mike was a visionary, who always had the Firm’s best interests at heart” said Edward B. Whittemore, a close friend and Murtha Cullina partner who worked with Mike for 16 years. “He was kind and humble, and never took himself too seriously.”

Mike McDonough is survived by his wife Ffiona and four children. His friends and colleagues at Murtha Cullina join his family in grieving his loss.
