On September 21, Marcel Bernier, partner and chair of Murtha Cullina’s Privately Owned Businesses practice and a member of the Tax, Health Care and Trusts & Estates practices was honored as Best Mentor at the 2023 New England Legal Awards dinner.

The Best Mentors category recognizes senior attorneys who have taken it upon themselves to prepare the next generation of leaders.

Marcel has practiced corporate, limited liability company and tax law for over 40 years and is very effective at assisting clients with achieving their objectives. He serves as general counsel to many businesses and provides advice with respect to structuring new business entities, acquisitions, sales, mergers, reorganizations, deferred compensation, phantom equity plans, buy-sell agreements and business succession planning.

Marcel was a co-chair of the Connecticut Bar Association Committee which drafted the Connecticut Uniform Limited Liability Company Act. He also was a member of the Connecticut Bar Association Committee which drafted the Connecticut Entity Transactions Act.

Marcel continuously provides coaching and has made a concerted effort to introduce mentees to clients and key individuals within his professional network, fostering many relationships for mentees over time. In addition to serving as a mentor, Marcel runs monthly department meetings where he ensures that all levels of the department are kept aware of the latest developments impacting the department and the firm. Last year, he implemented a continuing legal education component to these monthly meetings as an opportunity for junior attorneys to learn best practices.
